About the Unit: Launched in 2011 as a not-for-profit organization, UChicago Impact is one of four units that comprise the University of Chicago's Urban Education Institute (UEI). The other units include: the UChicago Charter School, the UChicago Consortium on School Research and the Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP). UEI’s academic home is in the School of Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice (CFS) at the University of Chicago.


Research continues to show that many of America's schools fail to prepare students of color and students from low-income families to succeed in college and beyond. Job Summary: Under supervision of unit leadership, the Project Manager works with the broader Survey Unit team to ensure that our partners have a seamless experience with the 5Essentials. The Project Manager manages the planning and execution of 5Essentials implementations around the country. The Project Manager establishes themself as a trusted source of expertise and uses this expertise to identify and resolve obstacles both proactively and in response to partner or team needs. They have the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and build positive, productive relationships with internal and external partners. This role requires knowledge of the 5Essentials and its technological infrastructure in order to successfully manage survey implementations and to assist in smooth daily operations and execution of the team’s projects. This position requires an individual to be able to see the big picture while diligently working to address the day-to-day responsibilities of a successful project implementation.

Other typical work-related activities will include:

  • Develop project plan/schedules. Update and maintain key project documents such as the project plan, deliverables, and other related materials as needed, helping ensure projects are delivered in scope and on time
  • Lead day-to-day operations of assigned projects and survey implementations in coordination with project and division leadership
  • Engage in project implementation, such as roster collection and verification, survey programming, report QA, etc. for portfolio of partnerships
  • Identify and record process or quality problems and bring them to the attention of leadership
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external partners
  • Prepare and deliver materials necessary for partner success
  • During survey administration, lead the process, with the support of colleagues, for handling in-bound inquiries and determining solutions to issues that arise in portfolio of partnerships
  • Track the status of issues, looking for patterns and potential solutions, and provide regular status updates of issues and resolutions to leadership

Required Education: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of project/vendor management experience and client-facing support services OR a minimum of six years of related experience required.    

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to build strong working relationships with others
  • Ability to collect, track, and act upon data and key performance metrics
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple concurrent internal and external relationships
  • Strong background in MS Office products, especially Excel; previous database experience preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong initiative and ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a productive disposition
  • A passion for supporting schools in their work to continuously improve student outcomes
